On America

No universal healthcare, yet people still flock here. Opportunities are real, but what makes you think those opportunities are yours? What makes you think you'll succeed? Maybe I just value stability more.

On Advisors

A student dropped out because of their advisor -- that shocked me. But then again, it's not exactly news in academia. Irresponsible advisors keep getting funding, keep taking students, keep looking important.
Some professors in China are bad -- they'll admit it themselves. American professors talk about integrity and excellence, but behind the scenes, plenty of them are just as fake. Especially the big-name ones -- look polished, act disgusting.

On the System

Is the system messed up? Yes. But from another angle, it hasn't really done anything outrageous -- it just does things you don't like. The people at the top of the food chain are fine. It's always the ones at the bottom looking up who suffer.
Cruel? Sure. But that's reality. Every society requires you to play the game. The older you get, the more you realize: self-interest comes first. Brotherhood, loyalty, being nice -- it's all talk. The people who don't care about any of that end up happier and get more out of life.
Kind people always get taken advantage of. You have to toughen up -- toward yourself and toward others.

On Switching Advisors

This whole advisor switch showed me who people really are. Some people are purely transactional -- they're around when they can get something from you, gone when they can't. Real friends don't care what you have or don't have.
Being strategic isn't wrong -- I can play that game too. It's not black and white. But at least don't treat friends like disposable tools.
It's been a while since it happened. None of those people have called. Whatever. I'll just pretend I never met them.
